Best time to visit Rajasthan — a camel safari across the Thar dunes

Rajasthan · When to Go

Best Time to Visit Rajasthan

The short answer is October to March, and it is not close. But the long answer is more useful, because Rajasthan is not one climate — the Thar and the Aravallis behave completely differently, and the month you can travel should change where in the state you go.

Month by month

What each
month is really like

  • October — the season opens. Warm days, cool evenings, everything is beautiful and not yet crowded. Arguably the best month of all.
  • November — clear and busy. Diwali and the Pushkar fair fall here; prices rise and rooms tighten.
  • December — cold at night, especially on the dunes. Christmas and New Year are the year's peak for price and crowds.
  • January — the coldest. Wonderful by day. A proper jacket for a desert camp is not optional.
  • February — the sweet spot. The Jaisalmer Desert Festival falls this month, and the Falgun Mela at Khatu Shyam runs into March.
  • March — warming quickly. Still good early in the month; by the end the desert is turning.
  • April to June — very hot. We will talk a first-time visitor out of Jodhpur or Jaisalmer in May. Mount Abu is the exception, and is lovely.
  • July to September — the monsoon. Green hills, dramatic light, empty forts, cheapest rooms. Udaipur is at its most beautiful; the desert is humid rather than pleasant.

Festivals

Dates worth
planning around

Two festivals genuinely change a trip. The Jaisalmer Desert Festival, held each February around the full moon, fills the city with camel races and folk performance — and fills every room in it, so book far ahead. The Falgun Mela at Khatu Shyam Ji, around February and March, brings hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and queues that can run for hours.

Diwali, and the Pushkar camel fair in November, both raise prices sharply and are worth either seeking out or avoiding deliberately. There is no middle ground.

Travelling October to March? That is exactly the window this trip was built for — Mehrangarh, Sonar Qila and a Sam dunes sunset.

Good to Know

Questions,
answered

October to March. Days are clear and walkable, and the forts and desert are at their best. October and February are the two loveliest months. December and January are cold at night, particularly on the dunes.
Only Mount Abu. From April to June, Jodhpur, Bikaner and Jaisalmer become genuinely difficult, with sightseeing restricted to early morning. Mount Abu, the state's only hill station, is cool and pleasant right through.
Yes, and it is underrated. July to September brings light rain, unexpected green, near-empty monuments and the lowest prices of the year. Udaipur and Mount Abu are at their most beautiful. The desert is humid rather than pleasant.
Each February, around the full moon. Expect camel races, folk music and dance, and a completely full city — book accommodation well in advance if your dates fall in that window.
January. Days are pleasant and clear, but desert nights drop sharply, and Mount Abu can be genuinely cold. If you are sleeping at a dune camp in December or January, bring a proper warm layer.
July to September, during the monsoon, when rooms are at their lowest and the monuments are empty. The most expensive windows are Christmas and New Year, Diwali, the Pushkar fair in November and the February Desert Festival.
